Training school program partnership provides quality healthcare programs for Lompoc students.

There are few fields more in need of workers than healthcare, something the Lompoc Adult School and Career Center (LASCC) works to address through their partnership with the AUMT Institute, a healthcare training school approved by the California Department of Public Health.
Since 2009, AUMT has partnered with various schools across the state to bring courses for various healthcare careers. While the school initially started with just phlebotomy courses, over time AUMT also added EKG and medical assisting programs to its offerings.
“AUMT helps us do something that we otherwise could not do by ourselves,” Elaine Webber, the principal of LASCC says. “They bring to the table the heavy lifting that a small or mid sized school like mine could not do.”
Webber notes that the phlebotomy certification course as a prime example of this, adding that a school the size of LASCC typically wouldn’t have the resources to hire dedicated personal.
“AUMT lets us provide-a very critical role where we get to career plan and map out all the steps.”

“The cost of that type of expertise would be prohibitive,” Webber says. “It allows me to just set up this program, run the program, but not have the need for that capital and resource heavy investment that would be required to offer phlebotomy [courses] in addition to medical assistant and EKG technician.”
Lucy Erdene, the director of business for AUMT, adds that in addition to the financial cost of the healthcare programs, AUMT also handles much of the overall workload that comes with running such programs.
“We bring our expertise, our curriculum, our instructors, equipment and materials,” Erdene says. “We provide everything for the adult schools and community colleges, and all they have to do is, in return, provide a classroom, bring the students.”
Making sure the courses also work well together is another important element of the partnership between AUMT and LACEC. Erdene says that phlebotomy and medical assisting specifically go hand-in-hand.
“Medical assistant is part of the medical systems training, however students don’t get certified in phlebotomy,” Erdene says. “If you take a phlebotomy class with us as well as the medical assistant, you will have not only two certificates but also a state license for phlebotomy.”
Another advantage to working with AUMT is the flexibility when it comes to providing these healthcare programs on a school-to-school level. This comes in the form of both scheduling and prices.
“Our prices differ across all our partners, really depending on their needs and also the community they’re surveyed,” Erdene says. “I think that really makes us stand out.”
On top of the overall convenience that comes with AUMT’s healthcare programs, Webber adds that the quality of instruction being provided was also fantastic.
“The quality of their facilitators and teachers is nothing short of excellent,” Webber says.
She says the quality is reflected in how many people are not only being hired after completing the course, but how it attracts those who have already started their healthcare career.
“We attract people already at an entry level in medicine and the training allows them to level up,” Webber says. “People are getting more training and more responsibility, but they’re also getting higher pay and more opportunities.”
Webber says the partnership not only plays a vital part in providing healthcare programs for people to enroll in, but helping build a clear pathway to a career in the field.
“AUMT lets us provide-a very critical role where we get to career plan and map out all the steps, all the realities of the job market,” Webber says. “We show them how we can map them to that six-figure salary that I think is really critical for a true living wage career.”
